The 2025 Global Chief Communications Officer (CCO) Turnover Study

Conducted by the Corporate Affairs Search Alliance (CASA), analyses global trends in CCO turnover.

It examines key factors affecting the role, including political shifts, technological advancements, and stakeholder activism. This research explores the latest trends in the hiring of communications leadership, including the types of companies that are most likely to experience CCO turnover, and the characteristics held by candidates that are most attractive to CEOs hiring for the role.

This study offers valuable insights into the evolving landscape of corporate communications leadership, highlighting shifting hiring trends and the growing strategic importance of the CCO role.

Our key findings include:

  • CCO Turnover Rate: The global turnover rate for CCOs in 2024 was 11.7%, with Europe experiencing a higher turnover (17%) compared to the U.S. (10.5%).
  • Industry Breakdown: The highest turnover was observed in the Consumer (16%), Financial Services (15%), and Technology (14%) sectors.
  • External vs. Internal Hires: 60% of CCO hires were external, with the U.S. showing a stronger preference for external candidates (66%) compared to Europe (52%).
  • Gender Representation: Women hold 64% of CCO roles globally, with significant variation across markets. The U.S. leads with 69% female CCOs, whereas Germany has the lowest representation, with 68% of CCOs being male.
  • Experience Requirements: While prior CCO experience is valued, only 52% of new hires had previous CCO roles.
